Climate Proofing Project Mekalagattu

MARI has played a crucial role in the successful execution of the Climate Proofing Project in Mekalagattu by integrating sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening community resilience against climate change. Through its grassroots approach, MARI has empowered farmers with climate-resilient farming techniques, such as zero-budget natural farming, mixed cropping, and organic vegetable cultivation, ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.

MARI’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development is evident in its support for integrated farming systems like poultry and sheep rearing, promoting nutritional security and diversified income sources for rural households. By facilitating drip irrigation and sprinkler systems, MARI has enhanced water conservation, improving agricultural productivity in a climate-vulnerable region.

The establishment of a Village Knowledge Centre and Community-led Custom Hiring Centre has further strengthened local capacities, ensuring farmers have access to essential agricultural tools and knowledge-sharing platforms. Through this project, MARI has successfully aligned itself with climate adaptation strategies, reinforcing its mission to promote sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, and rural prosperity.

Activities

Programs related to Poultry, Sheep rearing and Nutrition under Integrated Farming Systems, Pandal Vegetable Cultivation, Green Manure Cultivation, and BioControl Agents have been implemented.

Achievements

10 Households covered with Drip systems and Sprinklers.
11 farmers growing organic pandal vegetable cultivation.
10 farmers practising mixed cropping.
10 new farmers took up fodder cultivation.
50farmers are involved in Zero Budget natural farming.
30 farmers supported with Green manure cultivation (Jeeliga Seed).
16 farmers supported with Integrated Farming system (IFS) viz., Poultry, Sheep raring and vegetable cultivation.
A village knowledge centre has been set up in Mekalagattu village with Agri tools and operated as a community-led Custom Hiring Centre.
