Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) play pivotal role in local governance. Modern Indian Government has decentralised several administrative functions to village level, empowering elected Gram Panchayats. Constitutional (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 came into force to provide constitutional status to PRIs. In this context, we are involved in strengthening PRIs through capacity building of elected representatives particularly from the marginalized communities. This initiative has contributed in developing Anantharam (in Parvatahgiri Mandal) into a model GP.
To strengthen the Panchayati Raj system at the village or panchayat level and make the elected representatives responsible for the development of the poor.
The project has empowered elected representatives (in particular for dalits, poor and women) in five GPs through focused interventions i.e., preparation of micro plans, formation and strengthening of ward level pressure groups. Other impacts include conducting regular Gram sabhas meetings; improved Tax collection; and developing Anantharam into model GP.
